Lord of the Rings: a super abridged version

“To you, never!” He exclaimed, snatching his book back.

“Sebastian, you have no ideas, do you?” Her smirk dropped and she looked genuinely concerned that he might actually fail the assignment.

“Well, no, not really. Nothing I would have a clue about, anyway.” He closed the book and scooted closer to her to look at her laptop screen. She froze for a second as his smell surrounded her and she was momentarily unable to function.

“Well, you can’t write about me.” She stated indignantly. “And you can’t rewrite The Lord of the Rings either. Who’s Ollie?”

Sebastian sat back in his chair and ran a hand through his hair. He didn’t meet her eyes, instead let his wander over to the window.

“No one. Not an interesting story anyway.” He looked back over toward their workspace, picked up his pen and started scribbling messy spirals down the side of his page.

“Oh, okay.” Evie’s disappointment was evident, there was no way she could let slide that he was just given the perfect opportunity to open up to her and he had instead had completely shut her down. And what’s more, she was now completely paranoid about who Ollie could be. What if… But surely that couldn’t be right? Not with the way he acted toward her, she was pretty sure that he liked her, not completely sure, but pretty sure. Even so, the fact that he was clearly hiding something bothered her, only she was too scared to say anything to him. To her, it seemed that he was hiding it for a reason, after all. She gave up trying to figure it out and resolved herself with the fact that he would likely tell her when he was ready, at least, she hoped he would.

“Never mind then.” She added, when he didn’t say anything else. She turned back toward her laptop and began writing up more notes on her own story.

“Evie, I…” He started, but stopped when it seemed he didn't have anything really to say. Evie didn’t interrupt and save him from the awkward pause that followed, she let it play through, and waited a moment longer, then she responded.

“It’s okay, really. But you know that I trust you right? You can trust me too.” Her voice betrayed her hurt feelings, but she didn’t really mind, she wanted him to know how she felt, even if she wasn't saying it.

“I know.” He said, and she could tell from his flat tone that he understood.

They both continued to work on their respective stories, in a not completely comfortable silence. The mood surrounding them had definitely fallen, and Evie wanted desperately to pick it back up, to be in the place they’d been only moments ago back in the hall, but she supposed that this was just how depression worked, and clearly, Sebastian was no stranger to it either, and she knew that a mood could dissolve as quickly as it appeared.
